Religious Influence

   Charlemagne was a devoted Christian. He had an alliance with the church, and he strengthened the idea of kings and popes as joint political leaders. (Knight, 61-62) Charlemagne conquered and Christianized the strong pagan Saxons of the north and overpowered the Avars. He is considered to be the first Holy Roman emperor. Charlemagne wanted to convert all of the Frankish kingdom to Christianity. (Website 2)
